Popular Dog Breeds and Names

Owning a dog has become one of America’s most popular past times. But how do you choose the right dog for you? And when you do settle on one specific dog breed, what do you name your new pup?

Beagle

Beagles are great dogs if you have a family with small children. This breed of dog is extremely gentle and friendly - just don’t be surprised if he takes awhile to warm up to strangers. Also, make sure you’ve got this pup on a leash when out in public - his super-sensitive nose will lead him off on a wild goose taste if he catches a whiff of something interesting. Common Beagle names include Augie, Bea or Beau, Bugle, Ellie and Courage, after the cartoon character.

Dachsun

Dachsuns, or “Hot Dogs” as their lovingly referred to, are playful, clever and brave. Since these dogs are bred to hunt, they can be independent and even a bit bossy at times. Also, they’re likely to bond with one member of the household, not several. Common names include Frank and Oscar, alluding to hot dog brands, and Corto, which means “short” in Spanish. Also consider German names, since this is a German dog - exambples include Brautwurst and Lang, which means “long.”

Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are the clowns of the dog world. These canines are sweet and loving, plus reliable and gentle. Your Golden Retriever will love anyone and everyone he comes in contact with, and he’ll need lots of play time with whoever is up for a game. Popular Golden Retriever names are Sammy, named after the Retriever in “The Parent Trap,” Comet, named after the dog in “Full House” and Liberty, named after President Ford’s dog.

Pug

Pugs are pint-sized pups with huge personalities. These are great dogs for people who want a pet always vying for their attention. Plus, these dogs are adaptable to all kinds of people and atmospheres. However, these dogs aren’t happy when left along for a long stretch of time. Popular pug names include Bean, Jester, Pig Tail, Rex and Ringo. Any names that alludes to the dog’s playful side or makes fun of the fact that the dog is so tiny is a great name for a pug.
