Keep your Dog on a Leash!

It is hard to express just how important it is to keep one’s dog on a leash. It is very tempting to let a frisky pet frolic wherever it wants, especially if you believe it to be well trained. Nevertheless, there are temptations that even the most involved owner cannot foresee. A recent incident in Northern California certainly highlights such a situation.

Park Ranger Tasers Owner of Unleashed Dog
Just a few days ago a park ranger tasered the owner of a dog which was unleashed. The interaction, which started with an educational purpose and a request to put the dog back on a leash, deteriorated into an argument. When the owner, Greg Hesterberg turned away, the ranger discharged her taser in his back. Why the ranger felt sufficiently threatened to do so is still under investigation, and the ranger remains on duty.

Safety First
The fact remains that a leash law is in effect in nearly every municipality in the nation. These laws are there for the safety of both the animal and the public. Even the best trained dog may, at times, break with training, given the proper provocation. The results are the responsibility of the owner.

Even if your dog is docile and well behaved, keeping them on a leash will prevent them from getting lost. It will also keep them from chasing wildlife and decrease their risk of encountering rabid animals.

There is no question that dogs like to run free, and that is what leash free dog areas are for. Before you take your dog off leash, find out where it is safe to do so.
