Dave Gaillard of Bozeman and his wife were skiing when he spotted an avalanche heading their way. The last words that his wife remembers spoken by her husband were a warning for her to go to a safe area, but he was not able to heed that warning. He was buried in the avalanche near Cooke City.
David Gaillard and Jody Ray Verhasselt were both found by search and rescue teams under avalanches that occurred on New Year’s Eve. The search teams feared the worse when they continued to search for David Gaillard's dog named Ole. He had been missing since the avalanche, and it was feared that he had been buried also.
The Welsh corgi dog showed up at the motel where the Gaillard's had stayed before going skiing. Ole was alive and exhausted, and he had come back to find his owners. He was returned to the family's home in Bozeman.
