Choosing the Right Dog Name

If you're looking to add a new canine companion to your home, you should know that choosing a dog or puppy is a big choice. There are several things to consider when choosing a breed: how much activity the breed requires, whether the dog requires any special grooming, and what genetic disorders are common to the breed are just three of the many important questions you should ask before choosing a pet. You should also decide whether to buy the pet from a reputable breeder, a hobby breeder, or adopt one from an animal shelter or breed rescue.

Once you have picked your new addition to the family, the fun begins!  Have fun when picking out the name. It shouldn't be a chore. Whatever you decide on, understand that it might have to be permanent. Changing your dog's name after it is used to it will confuse it. After all, it is hard for an old dog to learn new tricks.

Here's a few fun ways to come up with a list of unique names for your new puppy or dog:

  •     Name him after a character in a book or movie you like. It doesn't have to be a dog character, although it can be.

  •     Look at historical or mythological figures

  •     Name your dog after a certain trait they have, or ironically name him something he's not, ie "Tiny" the Great Dane.

  •     Come up with words in foreign languages that are easy to pronounce and describe traits about your dog. For example, "Nezumi" means "rat" in Japanese and could be a cute name for a chihuahua

  •     Name it after a food it especially likes (Taffy, Tootsie, Skittle, Butterfinger, etc.)

  •     Name it after friend (Earl, Barney, Gus, etc.)

  •     Name it after a superhero (Clark, Bruce, Flash, etc.)

  •     Name it something culturally respective to the breed of dog it is (Scottie- Seamus Finnegan, Shih Tzu- Ming, etc.)

  •     Name it after a character in your favorite movie (Ron, Harry, Voldemort, Gandalf, Mario, etc.)
