The 2012 Westministers' Kennel Club Dog Show was a big event for dogs named after classic celebrities. Dogs bearing the monikers of movie stars swept the Best in Breed positions. Ava Gardner was named the best in the Shetland Sheepdog breed, while Georgio Armani took the Xoloitzcuintli category. Even James Bond took the win over the other Lhasa Apso pups on parade. Modern celebrities were recognized in the Best of Breed winners as well with Tina Fey taking the Brussels Griffon category.
Dogs sporting silly and fun names also filled the winner's circle. Captain Crunch was a German Shepard that took the win for his breed thanks to perfect body proportions and a shiny coat. The Puli known as Rumpus Bumpus wowed the audience, and I Want’A Talk About Me was picked as the best example of a Chinese Crested dog. Lafford Fly Me Too Farleysbane was the judge's favorite Papillion, but his owners confessed that they mostly just call him Dave at home.
At the end of the event, a Pekingese known as Malachy took home the Best in Show award. This variation on the Hebrew name Malachi means "messenger". The 11-pound dog won out over his competitors due to being a nearly perfect match to the breed standard. This will be Malachy's last year in competition, but he will retire with over 110 Best in Show in his four year life.
Odd and unusual monikers at the Westminister show included the breed names of some of the six new varieties qualified for showing this year. Owners of show dogs in the xoloitzcuintli breed are constantly teaching others how to pronounce the name. Others found the name of the Norwegian lundehund tricky to read from a card when announcing the breed.
